Sophie, our first rescued greyhound
Have you ever been to a Greyhound Race Track? We have! Have you ever stopped to wonder what happens to the dogs when their racing days are over? We hadn’t until we happened to drop into our local Garden Centre when members of the Retired Greyhound Trust were there. Not to put too fine a point on it, if adoption homes can’t be found for them they are destroyed!
Anyway, to cut a long story short, we are now owned by three rescued greyhounds, Sophie, who came from the Hall Green racetrack, Jojo and Susie, who both came from the Perry Barr track.

Contrary to popular belief greyhounds do not need a lot of exercise, they are built for short, swift bursts of energy not stamina, and twenty minute walk will do them fine. For the rest of the time they are real couch potatoes! Neither are they vicious. They wear muzzles when they are racing only so that they will not nip other dogs in the exciement of the race and not to protect their handlers. In the home environment they are gentle, loving dogs (though they may regard cats and other small animals as prey).
If you think you could give a home to a retired greyhound, visit your local greyhound rehoming organization (Google for ‘retired greyhounds’) and get yourself adopted by a greyhound. You’ll never look back.
